Small Drag on Performance

GFI touts VIPRE as a lightweight suite, small in size and with a small impact on performance. Most of my tests supported this promise. The boot test measures the elapsed time from the start of the boot process until the system is ready to use, averaging hundreds of tries with no suite and with a suite installed. Like Webroot and several others, VIPRE had no measureable effect on this test.
Security tools generally check files for malware on each access, which can sometimes slow standard file operations. A script that moves and copies a large collection of files between two drives took 15 percent longer with VIPRE protecting the system than with no suite, just a hair above average. Another script that zips and unzips that same collection of files took 12 percent longer under VIPRE. The average suite adds 20 percent to the time for the zip/unzip test, so VIPRE looks good.

On the other hand, VIPRE slowed down the browsing test significantly. A script that times how long it takes to fully load 100 Web sites in a row took 78 percent longer with VIPRE and its Web protection active. Overall, though, VIPRE didn’t put much of a drag on the test system.

Summary

Vipre Internet Security in time may be able to add a long list of security tests to its certifications portfolio. Currently, they have earned a solid reputation in email protection and are beginning to pass antivirus tests. We expect that Vipre will continue to improve and expand their internet security abilities.
